Clean, Canada Dry Tonic Water, and more Mr. You are a fluorescent factory in action, as both your blood and urine are fluorescent. But keep in mind that if you do, this experiment will no longer be taste-safe. In addition to highlighter, many other common materials fluoresce, including tonic water, cleaning products, antifreeze, some minerals, and even you (kind of). If you want to use clear oil but don’t have any coconut oil, you could also use baby oil. I’m not sure whether it’s clear from the picture, but the tonic water didn’t shine as brightly because vegetable oil isn’t clear. Here’s what you’ll need to do your very own glow-in-the-dark water and oil mixing experiment using taste-safe ingredients: Use it to talk to your little scientist about how oil and water don’t mix! How to Conduct a Glowing Water & Oil Mixing Experiment Required Materials This experiment is super simple and easy to set up, but the glow-in-the-dark aspect adds a really fun twist to a classic. The fact that we can now do these activities using edible ingredients is such a relief! Stand the soda bottle in the baking pan and mold the dough around it to form a volcano shape. The resulting mixture should be smooth and firm (add more water if needed). This glow, called fluorescence, is a special characteristic of tonic water’s main ingredient: quinine. (Cathy Scola, Getty Images) Tonic water glows faintly in sunlight a phenomenon that is even more apparent when it is illuminated by ultraviolet light. I love glow-in-the-dark experiments, but we have a two-year-old at home who puts just about everything in her mouth, so I was a little worried about using glow-in-the-dark paint or pigment around her. Start by making the cone of your baking soda volcano by mixing 6 cups flour, 2 cups salt, 4 tablespoons cooking oil, and 2 cups of water. Tonic water illuminated by ultraviolet light. On r/APTests2020, dinosauce313 created virtually identical posts for each AP exam, posts that skeptics believe were intended to catch students communicating with peers while testing. That opened the door for dinosauce313 to begin advertising a self-created subreddit: r/APTests2020. Moderators of the subreddit r/APStudents, hosting more than 75,000 members, announced the page would temporarily shut down to discourage users from discussing exam material. The account suddenly fell silent until May 10, the day before AP testing began. Within minutes, dinosauce313’s credibility as a real high schooler was already eroding. Critics allege the College Board is using undercover social media accounts to actively lure test takers into cheating. Yet as 3.4 million students complete increasingly high-stakes AP exams, accusations are mounting against the College Board’s security procedures. The College Board’s Senior Vice President of Advanced Placement (AP) and Instruction Trevor Packer announced May 10 that the organization caught “a ring of students who were developing plans to cheat” on upcoming AP exams–and the hunt for others was already on. “It’s not worth the risk of having your name reported,” he warned. "Once I rose above the noise and confusion, The son is the teenager, who is wayward- either he is rebelling or just feels mixed up inside- the chorus is telling him to carry on bec at the end there will be peace- once he grows out of that stage he will be in better control of his feelings and feel at peace. I see this song about a teenager who feels so much turmoil inside, but tries hide it. This is a little different than what everyone else has been say- but i first heard this song when I was going through a very emotionally trying adolescent stage. Tossed about, I'm like a ship on the ocean Though my mind could think, I still was a mad man Though my eyes could see, I still was a blind man Just to get a glimpse beyond this illusion It was written two days before they started setting up to record Leftoverture.Once I rose above the noise and confusion It proved to be prophetic.”Ĭarry On Wayward Son became their first major hit, and just like “ Dust In The Wind,” (group’s second hit), it was a last-minute to be added on their album. The positive note at the end (‘Surely heaven waits for you’) seemed strange and premature, but I felt impelled to include it in the lyrics. I saw myself as the ‘Wayward Son,’ alienated from the ultimate reality, and yet striving to know it or him. “I felt a profound urge to ‘Carry On’ and continue the search. When Livgren became an Evangelical Christian in 1980, according to him most of his song writing became all about “ searching.” He hears the voices in his dreams suggesting he is still haunted by his pasts, feeling remorse for killing or contributing to what he now thinks as wrong, he’s cynical of the glorification of war and expresses his contempt with it.Īccording to the writer’s explanation, the song was not intended to tackle or express anything specifically religious, however, it expresses some spiritual and same ideas. “Surely heaven waits for you” – someday he will leave the horror of battle to a more pleasant place, maybe by death, or it could again be the product of the belief that what he is doing is right and he will make it to heaven. The lyrics -“There’ll be peace when you are done” tend to lead people into thinking this is all about war but it is also a battle within himself, “Masquerading as a man with a reason” – he’s struggling to hold onto the belief that his side or his choice is correct, and that there is a reason for the violence, he start to doubt this justification, he battles within himself. Written by guitarist Kerry Livgren it was released for their 1976 album “Leftoverture” Hitting charts internationally, it quickly become one of their most popular songs played throughout TV series and films makes a great addition to their albums. Kansas – Carry on My Wayward Son – Lyrics Meaning This song is 96th on VH1s 100 Greatest Hard Rock Songs. All initial releases of the single had a B-side of “Questions of My Childhood,” continuing the tradition of Kansas and many other bands with multiple songwriters of putting a song by the bands other primary writer on the B-side of any single. This version was a much shorter version of the song, edited down to 3:26, a version that was also the bands only single to chart in the UK, reaching the top 60 there. The 7″ single has been certified Gold by the RIAA. In 1977, the song peaked at #11 on the Billboard pop singles chart, becoming their first Top 40 hit. “Carry On Wayward Son” is a progressive rock single recorded by Kansas and written by Kerry Livgren for their 1976 album Leftoverture. Description: PROMO B/W QUESTION OF MY CHILDHOOD What you do get, though, is near-native performance, without taking up any of the resources of the Mac you're working on. It's also kinda frustrating that all the VMs on ESXi are provided as a flat list, with no way to group them or put them in folders - but that's a first-world problem for people with a ton of VMs, not your average user. I found VMware Fusion also tabs windows, which is annoying ( fix). You can't use the 'Unity' mode to interleave your Mac and Windows apps, or use the quick launcher menu, for example, and there are quirks like getting black thumbnails for suspended VMs. Not all features of VMware are supported in this manner. To be clear: you can run and control your VMs entirely from ESXi's free web UI, if you don't want to pay for Fusion Pro, and/or use the built-in Screen Sharing or Remote Desktop features of your guest OSes instead. ESXi itself offers a free license for home use. VMware Fusion Pro is not free, though if you've been keeping up to date over the years an upgrade license is about $100. With VMware Fusion Pro, you can connect to that ESXi machine via its IP address, and then be able to run/manage your virtual machines mostly the same as when you could run them locally. What does that mean in practice? If you have a spare PC and Ethernet, you can install ESXi as its OS, configure it over the network through a web browser, and have it become the dedicated engine that runs your VMware virtual machines. VMware have an enterprise-level operating system called ESXi, which is a bare metal hypervisor. VMware no longer boots anything under Rosetta, and the VMware Fusion Apple Silicon preview only supports virtualizing Linux as Microsoft's licensing story for Windows on ARM does not include the Mac. Now, you've just bought a brand new Apple-Silicon-based Mac, and there is just simply no way to run your VMs any more. Or you're a Mac developer who needs to be able to run an older verson of macOS to test the backwards-compatibility of their apps. VMware in particular provided a great, Mac-like experience that really resonated with me, and I've used the app ever since.īut say you are somebody who has used VMware Fusion on their Mac for a while - you might have a library of virtual machines you need to preserve for various work or productivity-related tasks, like a Windows 7 install with Microsoft Office, or Visual Studio. Apple's transition to Intel in 2006 opened up whole new opportunities, and spawned VMware Fusion and Parallels for Mac. I started emulating Windows 95 via Connectix' Virtual PC a lifetime ago, and in my teenage years explored the exciting years of then-lost alternative operating systems, like BeOS, OS/2, NEXTSTEP, as well as keeping vaguely up to date with Microsoft's doomed 'Longhorn' experiments. I have always used virtual machines as my window into the past. You have plenty of great options for emulation, like UTM, but the performance penalty is significant, and that rules out many use-cases. X86_64 just isn't a trivial architecture to emulate, and it may never be feasible to do so on Apple Silicon at a useful speed as the operating systems you wish to run gain more and more complexity and become more and more demanding. The transition to Apple Silicon brought about many exciting things, but one of the capabilities left behind was access to the world of Intel-based virtual machines.
